An Active Optical Cable (AOC) is a high-performance cabling technology that uses electrical-to-optical conversion on the cable ends to improve speed and distance performance without requiring separate transceivers.
Technical Description for Active Optical Cable
AOCs (Active Optical Cable) consist of a multimode or single-mode fiber cable terminated with transceiver-style connectors (like SFP+, QSFP28, or OSFP) on both ends.
- Active Components: Unlike passive copper cables (DACs), AOCs contain active electronic components in the connector heads that convert electrical signals into light pulses for transmission over fiber.
- Seamless Integration: To the switch or server, the AOC appears exactly like a standard copper cable, but it offers the lightweight and long-reach benefits of fiber optics.
- Plug-and-Play: Because the transceivers are permanently attached to the fiber, there is no risk of connector contamination or fiber-mismatching, making them highly reliable.
