Direct Attach Cable ( DAC )
A Direct Attach Cable (DAC) is a high-speed networking cable consisting of a shielded Twinax copper cable with pre-terminated transceiver-style connectors (e.g., SFP+, QSFP28) at both ends. It is designed for short-distance, high-bandwidth connections within data centers and enterprise networks.
Technical Description for Direct Attach Cable
DACs provide a direct electrical connection between networking equipment, such as switches, routers, and servers.
- Twinax Construction: Made of two conductive copper wires twisted together within a single housing, offering superior shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI).
- Integrated Connectors: Transceiver housings are factory-installed and cannot be removed, meaning cables come in fixed lengths, typically ranging from 0.5m to 10m.
- Passive vs. Active:
- Passive DAC: Contains no electronic components for signal conditioning; it is cost-effective but limited to short ranges (typically up to 7 meters).
- Active DAC: Includes signal amplification and equalization circuitry to support longer distances (up to 15 meters).
- Power & Latency: DACs offer the lowest power consumption (almost zero for passive variants) and the lowest latency of all interconnect solutions because they avoid the electrical-to-optical conversion required by fiber optics.

- Top-of-Rack (ToR) Interconnects: Connecting servers to switches within the same rack or adjacent racks.
- Storage Area Networks (SAN): Linking storage arrays to servers or switches.
- High-Performance Computing (HPC): Facilitating rapid data exchange between compute nodes with minimal delay.
- Network Breakouts: Using breakout DACs to split one high-speed port (e.g., 100G) into four lower-speed ports (e.g., 4x25G) to optimize port density.
